“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” – Ephesians 4:31-32
It’s easy to fall prey to suspicions and fears. Mistrust, unforgiveness, and a negative view of humanity can creep into our hearts, even when we strive to be life a godly life, to be a righteous person. These feelings, if left unchecked, can warp our beliefs and justify actions that are far from godly. We may find ourselves holding onto resentment, accepting truth without knowing the facts to become an instruments of discord, even unknowingly aiding the plans of the evil one.
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” – Ephesians 4:29
The dangers of suspicion are amplified when substances like alcohol are involved even a few times per week. Alcohol alters our brain chemistry, increasing cortisol levels and making us more prone to negative emotions. Mistrust breeds more mistrust, creating a vicious cycle that pulls us further from the light.
“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” – 1 Peter 4:8
But there is a better way. Just as mistrust breeds mistrust, forgiveness breeds forgiveness. Choosing forgiveness over resentment breaks the cycle of negativity and allows love to flourish. As followers of Christ, we are called to embrace forgiveness, understanding, and love, even when faced with injustice.
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” – Colossians 3:13
While Saint Francis of Assisi wisely said, “Preach the gospel at all times, and if necessary, use words,” there are times when action is required. When we see good people turn away from the light, becoming instruments of darkness, we must respond. We must confront these “assassins of peace” with love and truth, guiding them back to the path of forgiveness and understanding. “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” – Matthew 5:44
The tenets of Christianity call us to choose understanding before judgment, forgiveness over resentment, love over anger, and faith over our own limited perceptions. Let us work to live by these principles, embracing the transformative power of forgiveness and walking in the light of God’s love. Even when faced with challenging circumstances, choose love, for it is in loving others that we truly reflect the love of Christ. It is how we are meant to live.
